Installing MetaTrader 5 on CachyOS with Bottles, GE-Proton, WebView2, and Correct DPI Scaling
This guide explains how to install MetaTrader 5 inside a Bottles environment, install Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime when needed, fix the oversized DPI/scaling issue, and create a Linux application shortcut.
This guide is written for CachyOS, but it should also work on most Arch-based distributions.
1. Install Bottles
The recommended way to install Bottles is through the official Bottles installation page. Open the official Bottles installation page. Bottles officially recommends the Flatpak version because it includes the needed runtime components and works consistently across distributions.
On CachyOS, make sure Flatpak is installed first:
1
2
sudo pacman -Syu
sudo pacman -S --needed flatpak
Then add Flathub if it is not already enabled:
1
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
Install Bottles:
1
flatpak install flathub com.usebottles.bottles
Launch Bottles:
1
flatpak run com.usebottles.bottles
You can also open Bottles from your application launcher.
Download the official Windows installer for MetaTrader 5 from here. The file is usually named something like:
mt5setup.exe
Also download Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime from Microsoft from here. You can select any type of installer if you want but the Bootstrapper is smaller and downloads the required runtime during installation. The Standalone Installer is better if the Bootstrapper has network, proxy, or download issues.
3. Install a GE-Proton runner
1
Fırst Step
In Bottles, go to Preferences → Runners
2
Second Step
Download ge-proton lastest version.
1
Fırst Step
Launch Bottles with flatpak run com.usebottles.bottles
2
Second Step
Create a new bottle, and use Application type.
3
Thırd Step
And name it as MetaTrader5.
4
Fourth Step
Select ge-proton as runner. After the bottle is created, open it.
5. Set the Windows version to Windows 11
Inside the MetaTrader5 bottle, open:
Settings → Windows Version
Set it to:
Windows 11
This can help newer installers and Microsoft components behave more correctly.
6. Install required dependencies
Inside the MetaTrader5 bottle, open Dependencies and install these dependencies:
allfonts
vcredist2015
vcredist2019
dotnet48
Recommended order:
- allfonts
- vcredist2015
- vcredist2019
- dotnet48
The .NET 4.8 installer can take a while. Do not close it too quickly. If .NET installation fails and the bottle becomes messy, it is usually faster to delete the bottle and recreate it than to repair a half-broken prefix.
7. Install Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime inside the bottle
Before installing MetaTrader 5, install Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime inside the same bottle. This step is required for this setup. Open the MetaTrader5 bottle and click Run Executable and select MicrosoftEdgeWebview2Setup.exe
Follow the installer.
If the small Bootstrapper installer fails because of network, proxy, or download problems, download the x64 Evergreen Standalone Installer from Microsoft’s WebView2 page and run that inside the same bottle instead.
warnıng
Do not skip WebView2. MetaTrader 5 may launch without it in some Wine environments, but login screens, embedded browser panels, account-related pages, broker web components, and some installer/runtime windows can break or appear blank without WebView2.
The correct order is:
- Create the MetaTrader5 bottle and Set the runner
- Set Windows version to Windows 11
- Install dependencies
- Install Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime
- Install MetaTrader 5
- Fix the DPI / zoom problem on a 2K display
On CachyOS, especially with Wayland, Hyprland, KDE scaling, or a 2K display, MetaTrader 5 may open with an oversized interface. The default Wine DPI can be too large.
To fix this, open the MetaTrader5 bottle in Bottles.
Open the bottle terminal:
Bottle → Terminal
Run:
winecfg
In the Wine Configuration window, go to:
Graphics
Find the DPI / screen resolution setting.
For a 2K display, start with:
72 DPI
If 72 DPI is too small, try:
80 DPI
If it is still slightly small, try:
84 DPI
Recommended values for a 2K screen:
72 DPI → smaller, usually good if MT5 opens huge
80 DPI → balanced starting point
84 DPI → slightly larger
90 DPI → large but still usually better than 96
96 DPI → often too large on 2K displays with Linux desktop scaling
For this CachyOS + Bottles + MetaTrader 5 setup, the recommended starting value is:
72 DPI
After changing the DPI, click Apply, close Wine Configuration, and restart MetaTrader 5.
If you are using Hyprland or another Wayland compositor with custom scaling, Wine DPI and compositor scaling can stack on top of each other. In that case, lowering Wine DPI below 96 is the correct fix.
Inside the same MetaTrader5 bottle, click:
Run Executable
Select:
mt5setup.exe
Complete the MetaTrader 5 installation normally.
After installation, MetaTrader 5 should appear in the bottle’s Programs list. If it does not appear automatically, use Bottles’ shortcut/program add option and manually point it to the MetaTrader executable.
The executable is usually:
terminal64.exe
A typical path inside the bottle looks like:
1
drive_c/Program Files/MetaTrader 5/terminal64.exe
9. Fix the DPI / zoom problem
On CachyOS, especially with Wayland/Hyprland or high-DPI displays, MetaTrader 5 may open with extremely large UI scaling.
To fix this, open the MetaTrader5 bottle in Bottles.
Open the bottle terminal:
Bottle → Terminal
Run:
winecfg
In the Wine Configuration window, go to:
Graphics
Find the DPI / screen resolution setting and set it to:
96
Apply the change and restart MetaTrader 5.
If 96 DPI is too small, try:
110
120
144
But for most broken oversized MT5 windows, 96 DPI is the cleanest starting point.
10. Create a Linux application shortcut
Bottles can create an application menu entry for MetaTrader 5.
Inside the MetaTrader5 bottle, go to:
Programs
Find MetaTrader 5.
Click the three-dot menu next to it and choose:
Add Desktop Entry
Despite the name, this usually creates a Linux application launcher entry, not necessarily a visible icon on your desktop.
If you installed Bottles through Flatpak and the shortcut does not appear, give Bottles permission to write desktop entries:
flatpak override com.usebottles.bottles --user --filesystem=xdg-data/applications
Then fully close Bottles and reopen it.
Try again:
Programs → MetaTrader 5 → Add Desktop Entry
After that, MetaTrader 5 should appear in your application launcher.
If your launcher still does not show it, check this directory:
1
ls ~/.local/share/applications | grep -i bottle
You can also refresh the desktop database:
1
update-desktop-database ~/.local/share/applications 2>/dev/null
On Hyprland, rofi, wofi, or similar launchers may need to be restarted or reopened before the new entry appears.
For Expert Advisors, indicators, scripts, templates, and profiles, do not manually guess the Wine prefix path first. Open MetaTrader 5 and use:
File → Open Data Folder
Common folders:
MQL5/Experts
MQL5/Indicators
MQL5/Scripts
MQL5/Include
Profiles
Templates
Tester
After copying files, right-click inside the MetaTrader 5 Navigator panel and choose:
Refresh
or restart MetaTrader 5.
12. Recommended final setup
A stable setup for MetaTrader 5 on CachyOS is:
Bottles installation: Official Flatpak
Bottle type: Application
Runner: ge-proton10-25
Windows version: Windows 11
Dependencies:
- allfonts
- vcredist2015
- vcredist2019
- dotnet48
Required runtime:
- Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime
DPI for 2K display:
- Start with 72 DPI
- Try 80 or 84 DPI if 72 is too small
- Avoid 96 DPI if the interface opens too large
MetaTrader installer:
- Official mt5setup.exe
Shortcut:
- Programs → MetaTrader 5 → Add Desktop Entry
WebView2 installer fails
Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is required for this setup.
If MicrosoftEdgeWebview2Setup.exe fails, use the x64 Evergreen Standalone Installer instead of the small Bootstrapper.
Run the WebView2 installer inside the same MetaTrader5 bottle, not on the Linux host and not inside a different bottle.
MetaTrader 5 opens too zoomed in on a 2K display
Run:
winecfg
Then go to:
Graphics → DPI
For a 2K display, start with:
72 DPI
Then test:
80
84
90
Avoid using 96 DPI if MT5 opens oversized.
